RE: spider!!

When we bought our place in Brown County, IN 23 years ago, we were warned that the Brown Recluse was common here. Shortly thereafter, a woman who was well known in the area died as a result of being bitten by one. We always check clothes that haven't been worn for a while. By the way, all spider bites are poisonous, its just that most of them do not cause much of a problem and some you'd never even notice.

RE: Getting it home if you are unable??

Last month on our trip to Montana, I told my husband I wanted to drive some. I'd never driven the truck with the 5th wheel hitched on (only our second long trip out). It was only about half an hour the first time, but I was hooked. On the trip back he wasn't feeling up to par so I was able to take over some for him. Haven't tried to back it into a space yet, but all in good time. I have no doubt I could hitch and unhitch it, too. I watched at the dealership when we bought it and have been right there every time its done. Since he is a transplant recipient and has some other health issues as a result, if he really came down sick, it would be off to the closest hospital and notification to the VA. They would airlift him to one of the two VA hospitals he uses and I would drive the 5th wheel home with confidence.

RE: Check out the new RV FRIENDLY Shell stations!!!

We, too, spent the night at the Shell station in Wenona, IL on our way to Madison, WI and it was really great. Full hook-ups for $20 + tax. Wasn't that noisy, either. There was a big class A hooked up next to us. We were able to put out our slides and felt secure. I'm watching for more of them on our future trips.

RE: Convenience Food

A frozen turkey breast (bone in) can be popped in your crock pot and 8 hours later its thoroughly cooked and almost falling off the bone. Fresh cooked turkey for one meal and freeze the remainder for meals later.

RE: Loaded Potato Soup (from Apple Barn Pigeon Forge, Tn)

WOW! Made this soup tonight with two slight changes. Used the equivilent of one chopped onion in it and added no salt. It was great! My husband wasn't too pleased I was trying this new recipe because "I like your potato soup", but was telling me how good this was after one or two spoonfuls of it. He had three and a half bowls of it. This is definitely a keeper. Thanks so much, Kamphiker, for bringing the recipe to us.

We're potato soup lovers anyway and this sounds absolutely scrumptious. Will have to make it asap. Thanks for the recipe.

RE: 1st Walmart stay, had a bad experience!

We haven't had this problem at WalMart or rest areas, but last June when we were in Florida we left the 5er at Ft. DeSoto and visited DH's brother on Tierra Verde and several other places we enjoy. Twice when we stopped for fuel, panhandlers hit us up. They are very persistent and very irritating. One was male who hit me up first, then after I told him I had no money on hand, he hit up my DH as he was coming back to the truck. The other was an older female who hit up the DH and just didn't want to take "no" for an answer. He finally got back to the truck and drove off.

RE: farmers market--score!

I went to a couple of farms last year to get tomatoes to can and wound up getting huge beautiful ones at such a cheap price I couldn't believe it. Got some other stuff, too. This year I have to go to them for my produce. The older man who uses part of my garden tilled up most everything while we were gone for our 3 week RVing trip to Montana. Well, our small family of deer did help him a bit. Well, they've got to eat too and I love watching the fawns.

Bad WalMart Campers

Last night we pulled into a WalMart parking lot in Montana to do some shopping and to spend a night. There were a lot of other RV's there and we couldn't believe two of them we saw. One was pulling a small TT and was letting his grey water flow into the parking lot. Due to the amount we saw on the ground this morning, he must have dumped more than the grey water. Another was a really big motorhome parked across several parking spaces with 3 slides out. Both were still there when we left this morning. More examples of people who need to learn proper RV does and don'ts. Well, maybe they already know them, now they need to practice them.

RE: A Universal Greeting when on the Highway

When we're biking, we put our left hand out with a slight downward angle and the hand open when another biker comes from the opposite direction. I know this isn't the solution, especially in bad weather, but how about a thumbs up?

KOA Deforest, WI

This campground was recommended to us by fellow RVers on here when we needed a place to leave our 5th wheel while at the VA Hospital in Madison for a couple of days. One of them, CarGuy, even went to the campgrounds and explained our situation to the owner, Linda. She was waiting for us to call and make our reservations. I have nothing but praise for Linda, her staff and this campground. The rate was great (we stayed a night before going further on our trip)and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay there. I would highly recommend this campground to anyone staying in the area.

RE: Our cross country follies.....(long) UPDATE

Gosh, I thought our trip to Florida with the 4 year old great-nephew and 8 year old great-niece was a bummer. We only got infested with ants, had to replace our awning (attack palms, you know) and emergency window (decided to depart us somewhere in Alabama), and learned we won't take the kids again until they are older. I hurt for you.

RE: Do any of you have a covection toaster oven? Like it?

I bought one from Linens 'n Things foe about $60 on sale around 3 1/2 years ago to use in our concession trailer. Never got a chance to use it, but unpacked it and put it into our 5th wheel before we left home on Monday to use on this 3 week trip. I have a combination regular/convection oven at home and thought this would get more use than the gas oven in the RV.

RE: Trailer Parking Spot

We park our 5th wheel in the yard and put what looks like big plywood squares under the tires. Just like JimInMa, we have to walk through wet grass sometimes and get grass clippings in it. Next time we have gravel brought in we are going to dump a lot where we normally park it.

RE: Sunday Heart Smart Recipe # 91

Wow! Sounds good to me, heart smart or not. But, you're right, you've got to have a little reward every once in a while.

RE: Madison, WI?

Thank you everyone for all your help. An additional thanks to AYRTIME for the location and phone numbers and to Car Guy for stopping and talking to Linda on your lunch break. Also for letting me know that I didn't have Private Messaging on here. I have taken care of that. We will be just parking the 5th wheel while we are up there. My DH was sent there from the VA in Indianapolis to the VA/U. of WI in Madison for his heart transplant 3 years ago. I was there for the transplant and the month after, but hadn't been able to go with him each time he had to go back for the biopsies to determine if he had any rejection or not. This time I get to go. The VA puts us up in the Staybridge which is a very neat place to stay. The medical care he's had there has been outstanding. We both really like Madison and the few other areas we've seen up there. The people have been so very friendly when we have been there. My only regret is that the store in Madison we went to originally for their wide selection of cheese (including the one from Indiana that I love and can't afford to buy here) and just about any brand of beer you can think of as well as some you can't, has really cut back on their cheese selection. Well, I'll still check it out while we're there. Thanks again everyone for being so nice.

RE: Ft.deSoto Park, Florida

Oh, don't change your reservation! I was just warning you that if you look at the site when you get there and it looks a little tight, contact the ranger about getting another before you chance damage. That is what we should have done. The other sites around us were occupied, but they had wider openings and would have been easy for us to get into. Ft. DeSoto is great and I do hope you have as wonderful a time as we did other than the original site being impossible for a rig of our size to get into. We definitely will be going back again.

Madison, WI?

Does anyone know of a place very close to Madison, WI where we could safely leave our 5th wheel for about 3 to 4 days. My DH is having heart biopsies done and the VA will be putting us up at a very nice place near the hospital. We want to take the 5th wheel because after the biopsies are done we want to take a little trip before coming back home.

RE: Ft.deSoto Park, Florida

geeman53, we spend several days at Ft. DeSoto last month and its a really nice place. Do watch the "attack" palm trees, though. We got reservations for a beautiful site (#204, I think) that had a fantastic view over the water. We had given the ranger the size of our 5th wheel and TV when we made the reservation, however, we should never have gotten that spot. It wasn't made for something our length to back into - another cleared foot and it would have been fine. Even had an experienced full-timer who has a 40-some foot unit try to get it in for us. Tore up our canopy trying. Learned a good lesson. Just because the booking person thinks you'll fit into a spot doesn't mean you will so don't keep trying thinking you will. We wound up in a pull through for the night and when we let the ranger know about the problem the next day, he laughed and said that does happen and that we could stay in the pull through for the rest of our reservation. After trying to get into the original spot and the damage, DH said, forget it. He'd had enough, we wouldn't do anymore of this (meaning rving). After a good night's sleep, he changed his tune and said we would continue to rv, but would pay the extra for a pull through site. Hope you enjoy it as much as we did after settling in. Oh yes, our insurance company was very prompt in paying in full for having our 21' awning replaced.

RE: Marinated crackers - I cannot find the recipe

Thanks BirdSongPlace. I may try the recipe again with the oyster crackers, but it will be a while. I can only take defeat a little at a time. :) Seriously, I will try it with the other crackers.
